Lesson

For this assignment, as you can probably guess, I was tasked with teaching a lesson on a part of my topic. For this lesson,  I asked myself the question, "How have all-nighters negatively affected the health of students and workers?".

And this was my lesson plan, and below that are my slides.

Objectives:

  1. Students will identify the risks that are associated with pulling an all-nighter.

  2. Students will analyze how pulling an all-nighter affects the productivity and morale of workers and students.

  3. Students will understand how pulling all-nighters can even affect the economy.

Lesson:

  1. Introducing the problem (Hook) – 1.5 min

– Ask how many students have pulled an all-nighter.

– Select between one and four students how many all-nighters they can recall pulling.

  1. The College Experience (Introduction); Source: (Hershner) - 3 min

– At least 3 days a week, 60% of students report that they are dragging, tired, or sleepy.

– The consequences of sleep deprivation and daytime sleepiness are especially problematic to college students and can result in lower grade point averages.

– A cardinal sign of a delayed circadian system is an irregular sleep schedule, where students have catch-up sleep on the weekend.

– Daytime sleepiness is a major problem, exhibited by 50% of college students compared to 36% of adolescents and adults.

  1.  Stepping down to Highschool/Middle School (Lecture); Source: (“All-Nighters on Students”) – 3 min

– Without enough sleep, connecting (and remembering) that information can be very difficult—so all the material he or she stayed up all night studying is not going to stick.

–even a single all-nighter can make it easy for your child to fall into a cycle of poor sleep. When your child doesn’t get enough sleep, his or her mind won’t be recharged or alert.

–Instead of falling into the habit of staying up late to get work done, help your child learn to get organized and always be on top of work so he or she doesn’t have to pull an all-nighter.

  1. 24 Hours is the minimum(Lecture); Source: (Coveney) – 3 min

– Sleep deprivation has been associated with impaired cognitive performance, decreased productivity in the workplace, and an increase in accidents and errors, highlighting the social costs and consequences of poor sleep.

– Concerns have been raised over the length of time we spend sleeping is being curtailed in favor of waking activities and social opportunities.

– Research into the sociology of sleep has begun to shed light on the social, cultural, and political dimensions of sleep. How, when, where, and with whom we sleep is influenced by numerous social factors as well as by transitions across the life course.
